We will begin with the Children's program which will last over an hour. This will be followed by the Christmas meal.

Community Potluck: Everyone should bring a Main Dish, Dessert and something to drink. Remember Lithuanian Kučios traditions dictate no meat, but fish, grains, fruit and vegetables are OK.

Coffee, tea and utensils will be provided.

Children's Program: First time attendees, prepare your child with some type of talent to present to Santa, like a poem, song, play an instrument or any type of act. The children will be rewarded with a gift from Santa afterward.

Note to parents: please bring a gift for your child regardless if he or she performs. The gifts should be in a brown lunch bag with a bow or other ornament on top. Write your child’s name on the bag clearly so Santa can read it. Leave your child’s gift at the reception table to be placed in Santa’s bag.

Donation: Please leave a donation at our community table to help pay for the nights expenses.

Rooster Rock State Park
I-84, 22 mi. East of Portland (exit 25), located along the Columbia River

Bring a pot luck dish and drink, blankets (not sure if we will have tables), lawn chairs and towels if you are going swimming. This year we do not have a reservation so we will find a location as we arrive. If anyone is willing to get there before 12:00 and try to find some tables let me know (360-834-6988 or 605-2258). All others look for the Lithuanian flag or yellow/red/green colors.

* Piknikas [angl. picnic] - iškyla į užmiestį ar parką, dažniausiai su užkandžiais ir tam tikromis pramogomis. Sėkmingo pikniko paslaptis - paprastumas, planavimas ir reikalingų daiktų susipakavimas. Kūrėjas man daugiau asocijuojasi su režisieriumi, kuriam būtina įsivelti į tam tikrą situaciją, tapti jos dalimi ir kurti kompoziciją, vadovaujantis savais principais. Mane domina ta konkreti akimirka, kurią sukuria pats gyvenimas. Gatvė man – geriausia scena, kurioje randi visko, ko tik širdis geidžia. Todėl ir mano darbai yra labiau dokumentinio pobūdžio. Jokių paslapčių ar išradimų čia nėra – ką matai tu, matau ir aš.

Come join us for the 13th Annual Lithuanian Easter Traditions Day. An event for all ages where we will paint traditional Lithuanian Easter Eggs with Bees wax and dyes or you can bring your previously dyed eggs and scratch your designs in the centuries old folk way. A third and most interesting way of preparing your eggs is with burnt bees wax. Master Petras Astrauskas will demonstrate this method.

Games: We have adapted versions of Lithuanian village games and traditions for all ages.

Egg roll: This village tradition where the children go from village to village to compete for eggs. They roll the eggs from boards and the one who hits another egg would be able to claim it for him/her self, much the same as children play for marbles. We have adapted the game to be the one who rolls the furthest wins. For winners of first, second and third places (boys and girls category) there are small prizes to chose from all other children will receive Easter candy .

Egg smash: For adults we have the egg smash. In this traditional custom on Easter morning or the Easter meal each family member would take a hard-boiled egg and hit the egg together with your neighbor. The one whose egg cracks loses and the game continues until there is one winner. Everyone will get in a large circle and pair up. One by one the circle gets smaller until we only have two people left. The strongest egg will win and receive a Lithuanian Porcupine cake.

What to bring:
Hard boiled eggs, I would suggest at least six eggs per person if not more.
A pencil with an eraser, one for each member of your group (we will supply pins to stick in the eraser).
A roll of paper towels, what you don’t use you can take back home.
Dyes, burners and other supplies will be provided

Dessert potluck event: Everyone is asked to bring a homemade cake, cookies or other sweets and a bottle of juice or soda pop. Unless otherwise asked please do not bring any other food other then dessert. Coffee and tea will be supplied. As always it is BYO wine or other.

Raffle for Cancer: We will be raffling Lithuanian Easter Eggs by Petras Astrauskas. All proceeds will benefit Paguoda - a children’s Cancer Society in Lithuania. If you can’t make it to our event but want to donate or purchase some ticket in advance please write to Vilius Zalpys at zalpiai999@aol.com

– Kas labiausiai įstrigo atmintyje per šiuos trejus su puse metų bendraujant su Šiaurės Amerikos lietuviais, atstovaujant Lietuvai aukščiausiame diplomatinės tarnybos poste? Gal ką palinkėtumėte neseniai 10-metį atšventusio „Amerikos lietuvio“ skaitytojams?

– Iš tiesų su lietuviais nemažai laiko praleidau per šiuos metus Amerikoje ir palaikiau glaudžius ryšius. Mano žmona yra Amerikos lietuvė, tad daug daugiau žinau apie išeiviją. Būdamas ambasadoriumi, bandžiau pasiekti ir tolimesnes bendruomenes, lankiausi Atlanta (GA), Los Angeles ir San Francisco (CA), Floridoje. Neįtikėtiną įspūdį paliko apsilankymas tolimoje Washingtono valstijoje, ypač sužavėjo Portlando Lietuvių Bendruomenės apylinkės pirmininkas Vilius Žalpys. Jis subūrė lietuvius, sutvarkė ten esančias tautines kapines, sukvietė žmones į jų atidarymą, daugeliui padėjo ieškoti genealoginių šaknų, nuotraukų, pagelbėjo aiškinantis lietuvių kilmės asmenims jų šeimų istorijas. V. Žalpys išmoko lietuvių kalbą, subūrė chorelį. Susitikimas su šiuo žmogumi buvo žadą atimantis patyrimas. Smagu, kad kažkas taip džiaugiasi savo lietuviška kilme. Prisimenu tai kaip vieną iš daugelio malonių įspūdžių JAV...

Ambasadoriaus postas įdomus ir svarbus tuo, kad išties gali iš arčiau stebėti panašius dalykus ir mūsų tautos gyvenimą tokioje didžiulėje bei įtakingoje šalyje. Tai yra ir atsakomybė, bet, kita vertus, tai ir didelis malonumas vykdyti šią misiją.

Jūsų laikraštį sveikinu atšventus pirmąjį jubiliejų, linkiu sulaukti ir 100 metų, vėliau dar daugiau pridėti nulių. Gal Jūs ir esate toji sėkmės istorija, nes per tokį trumpą laiką pasiekėte tikrai daug – sukūrėte žaismingą ir aktualų laikraštį, perėjote į virtualų pasaulį, leidinį žmonės gali išvysti visame pasaulyje. Man norėtųsi, kad neapsiribotumėte vien tik lietuvių bendruomene ir žvilgtelėtumėte plačiau. PVC Reunion Baltic Party planning meeting

Dear Valdyba and nariai,

As you can read there will be a meeting this Friday at the Latvian Hall. I will not be there because I will be on the road to LA. If anyone can attend that would be good. I did meet with an Estonian who is helping to organize this event and I told him that the Lithuanians will dance two dances and possible sing a song. As for the ethnic food that they are looking for we will have to organize with that.

If anyone goes you can call me while your there on my cell phone if needed.

PVC Reunion Baltic Party planning - meeting request

Dear Baltic Friends,

Thanks for responding to the meeting request. It looks like Friday
July 2nd time is suitable for most of you. We start at 7:00pm PDT. We
have not been able to reach the Latvian Hall coordinator yet but we
are hoping to connect with him tomorrow to make sure that we can use
the Latvian Hall. We also have some alternative locations not too far
from the Latvian Hall, so in day or two I will let you know.

I have added couple of additional Estonian community members to the
list who can potentially help with with the program. Please forward
this to your respective community members if they are willing to help.

Summary: Meeting Friday July 2nd, 7:00 pm. Location will be announced soon.

You may already know but the Baltic community is mourning the loss of
Algirdas Brazauskas, a great Lithuanian statesman who did a lot for
Lithuania and the unity of the Baltic states. He was a Sajudis member
and very brave to declare Lithuania independent, first among the
Baltic States (March 11, 1990). He was a good friend of our president
Meri.

Pianist Andrius Zlabys has appeared widely throughout the world as soloist and chamber musician. A prizewinner at the 2003 Cleveland International Piano Competition, he performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra.

Mr. Zlabys made his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2001. He also performed at such venues as Avery Fisher Hall, Concertgebouw, Carnegie’s Zankel and Weill halls, Teatro Colon, Wigmore Hall, Musikverein and Suntroy Hall. His European engagements include Menuhim, Salzburg and Lockenhaus music festivals.

Mr. Zlabys performed extensively with Mr. Kremer, including recitals in Japan, China, Europe, and South America. In 1998, Mr. Zlabys toured in recital with the violinist Hilary Hahn. In 2000, Andrius was a winner of Astral National Auditions in Philadelphia.

Andrius Zlabys began piano studies at the age of six in his native Lithuania and studied with Laima Jakniuniene at the Viurlionis Art School for eleven years. Subsequent to his arrival in the US, he studied with Sergei Babayan (vleveland Institute of Music), Claude Frank (Yale School of Music), Seymour Lipkin (Curtis Institute of Music) and Victoria Mushkatkol (Interlochen Arts Academy).

Most recently, Mr. Zlabys made his debut with Rotterdam Philharmonic in the spring of 2007.

A full day program of Lithuanian Heritage in North Kittitas County

Saturday June 13^th, 2009

Program begins at Roslyn Cemetery

Directions: from I-90, take Roslyn exit to S.R. 903. Continue to Roslyn to Pennsylvania Ave. Turn left on Pennsylvania and follow the signs to the Cemetery.

Planned events for the day are as follows:

Roslyn Lithuanian Cemetery

11:00 am - 11:45 am

Opening greeting by William (Vilius) Zalpys.
Unveiling of the new Lithuanian Cemetery Monument
Music and song with traditional Lithuanian instruments.
Placing of wreath and flowers.
Last words by local officials.

Roslyn Polish-Lithuanian Cemetery

12:00 am -12:30 pm

Unveiling of new cemetery sign, Polish and Lithuanian anthems.
Placing wreath of Rue on two newly purchased grave markers for Lithuanian children.
Traditional Lithuanian folk song.
Placing of wreath at the graves of unnamed and forgotten Lithuanian Coal Miners who died in the Mines.
Closing words.

Pennsylvania Street

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

No-host lunch at one of the local eateries on Pennsylvania Street.
Singing and accordion music by Lithuanians in the local bars.
Lithuanian folk dancing in designated area.
Self-guided tour of the Roslyn Museum and Miners’ Memorial.
Museum photographs of Lithuanians and pertinent items will be pointed out.
Vendors with Lithuanian Items will be located outside the Museum.

Dinner

5:30 pm

Dinner and program at the Ronald Community Club Hall (former Ronald school).
Program will include the historical life of the area’s Lithuanian immigrants accompanied with songs, skits and slides.
Dancing with music by Lithuanian Vidas Svagzdys of Seattle, WA.

As a 1907 Lithuanian dance advertisement in Cle Elum said, “The Dance will last until the last couple leaves the dance floor.”
